Be the ‘Best You’ you can be
Instructions for the Photographer
Use a digital camera or camera
phone to take two pictures of your
friend: her front and left side.
Position her with her back touching
a coloured light wall, leaving a
small space around each side of her
face as shown below. Check our
examples at the bottom of the page
to see common mistakes to avoid.
Natural light gives the best skin
tones, but check there are no harsh
shadows on her face.
If you need to use flash,
make sure the shadows
from the flash aren’t in
front of her face on the side
view by turning the camera
onto its side (portrait
format) with the flash on
the same side as your
friend’s nose.
Before submitting the
photographs, check they
are in focus and that her
face shape has not been
distorted by getting too close.
How not to do it!
Check out the photographs below before taking your own photos to make
sure you get the best quality images.
Instructions for You
Remove any makeup which might be
   concealing blemishes.
• Secure your hair back from your
   face.
• Remove glasses if worn.
• Your face should be relaxed, with
   eyes open, back teeth gently
   resting together and lips pressed
   lightly together without smiling.
• Look straight at the camera for
   the front shot.
• Turn to your right and look
straight ahead for the side shot.
• Now you’re ready to upload!
Smaller images
If you have a dial up modem instead of
broadband access, you can submit your
images more quickly by ensuring you
choose the smallest file size (e.g. 1936
by 1296) if you have a high resolution
camera. Images from most compact
cameras or mobile phone cameras will
not take too long to upload.
To use the Windows Paint utility to
reduce the size of an image further,
open the image using Paint and press
Ctrl+w to open the Stretch and Skew
dialog box. Enter 50% into the
Horizontal and Vertical value boxes of
the Stretch section, press OK and save
the file.
